Shirley Lois Keil Levine, 75, died peacefully Friday, April 1, 2005 in St. Mary's Hospice in Duluth, surrounded by family and friends. She was born Feb. 5, 1930, the daughter of Frank and Sarah Keil, and was a lifelong resident of Duluth. She married Ben Levine in 1949 and together they raised four children. While they lived in several different homes, Caribou Lake was the home of her heart. Shirley was a strong and independent woman, committed to her family, community, and to helping others. She was a wife, a mother, a professional, and a friend. As her children grew, Shirley returned to college and completed her degree. She became first a speech therapist for St. Louis County schools and then a counselor at the Human Development Center. She developed an innovative Domestic Abuse program and led a day treatment program for troubled children. Shirley was an active member of Temple Israel in Duluth, where she taught Sunday school, played the piano and sang in the choir, and was a leader in many other ways. She volunteered at the Women's Shelter and Women's Clinic. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, biking, knitting, playing the piano, and spending time with her grandchildren. With Ben, she kept a household full of love, life, music and the laughter of friends. She was preceded in death by her brother, Sam Keil. Shirley will be dearly missed by her husband of 55 years, Ben Levine; her daughter, Kathy Levine, and her partner, Mike Olson of Duluth; her sons and daughters-in-law, Rob Levine and Amelia Merz of Minneapolis, Michael Levine and Holly Lindsay of St. Paul, and Bill and Lorna Levine of St. Louis Park; and her sister, Vera Fuchsman; and nephew, Paul Fuchsman of White Plains, N.Y. Special thanks to long time friends, Trudy Vrieze and Deb King and cousins, Bill, Stevie, Aaron, Angela and Samantha Levine who were there all along, and at the end, to her supportive friends in the knitting club. She will also be missed by her four grandchildren, Mara and Ilana Levine and Nathan and Sam Lindsay-Levine. The family is especially grateful to Dr. Sande and the St. Mary's Hospice for their compassionate care of both Shirley and our family. Lucy will miss her too. MEMORIAL SERVICE:11 a.m. Sunday, April 3, 2005 in Temple Israel, 1602 East Second Street, Duluth. The service will be followed by a celebration of Shirley's life in the Temple.
